Making the right adjustments to your John Deere S700 Series Combine ensures optimal harvest results and minimizes crop loss. This article walks you through the most important combine settings you can adjust using the Generation 4 display, including concave clearance, spread width, and the use of shortcut icons for faster navigation.

1. Adjusting Machine Settings

One of the first things operators need to know is how to view and change basic machine settings.

  • View Current Settings: Check the bottom-left corner of your Generation 4 display for the current machine settings.

  • Change Settings Quickly:

    • Use physical shortcut buttons on your console, such as the concave clearance button.

    • Press the shortcut button, watch the adjustment setting appear at the top of your screen, and use the scroll wheel to fine-tune the setting.

    • A spinning arrow will appear, indicating the adjustment is being made. Once finished, the spinning icon will disappear.

  • Adjust via Display:

    • Navigate to the Harvest Settings menu.

    • Use the plus (+) and minus (-) arrows to fine-tune the setting.

    • Close out when done.

2. Spreader Settings & Pattern Control

Efficient residue management is crucial for a uniform crop spread.

  • Find Spreader Settings: On the custom run page, locate the spreader icon.

  • Adjust Spread Width:

    • S700 combines display spread width as a percentage (older models show spreader RPMs).

    • Press the spread icon to adjust the width—tap “+” for a wider spread, “-” for a narrower.

    • Confirm changes on the screen and close out.

  • Manage Spread Direction:

    • If your crop is spreading further to one side (e.g., due to wind), angle the pattern for even coverage.

    • The display lets you adjust spread direction—a graph shows real-time changes.

    • When you turn the combine at the end of the field, swap the spread direction with the swap icon for consistency.

  • Shortcut Button Setup: Assign swap functions to shortcut buttons on the hydro handle or the display for easy access.

3. Using Shortcut Icons for Fast Navigation

Shortcut icons at the bottom of your screen enable quick access to common combine functions.

  • Folding Functions: Instantly unfold or close your grain tank covers when starting the field.

  • Engine Settings: Access with a single tap on the engine shortcut.

  • Separator Settings: Use the separator icon to adjust relevant settings.
