Does my mower need serviced after sitting for a while?
If your mower has been sitting for more than a few months, especially over winter, it’s a good idea to have it serviced before you mow.
Why service a mower that’s been sitting?
When a mower sits, fuel, oil, and batteries don’t age well, and that can cause starting and performance issues once you try to use it again.
- Gasoline can go stale and clog the fuel system, making the mower hard to start or causing it to stall
- Batteries can drain down in storage, leading to weak or no-start conditions in the spring
- Old oil and dirty filters can reduce engine protection the next time you run it
How long is “a while”?
As a rule of thumb, plan on at least a basic service if your mower has been parked and unused for a full off-season.
- Sitting 1–2 months in-season: Do a quick check (oil level, blades, tire pressure, battery) before you mow, but full service may not be necessary if it was recently maintained
- Sitting all winter or 3–6 months: A pre-season service is strongly recommended to avoid starting problems and protect the engine
- Sitting a year or longer: Have our team inspect it; expect fuel, filters, battery, and possibly more to need attention
Minimum checks before you mow
Even if you don’t schedule full service right away, do these quick checks on a mower that’s been sitting.
- Look at the fuel and replace it if it’s been in the tank for more than a couple of months.
- Check oil level and condition; change the oil if it’s dark, dirty, or more than a season old
- Inspect the air filter and blades; clean/replace the filter and sharpen or replace blades for a clean cut
- Test the battery on riding and zero-turn mowers; charge or replace if it’s weak or slow to crank
If it still won’t start, runs rough, or cuts poorly, it’s time for professional service.
