How can I prevent starting problems with my John Deere equipment?

Follow a routine maintenance schedule and seasonal prep steps is the best way to prevent starting problems for your equipment.

Preventative maintenance is key to ensuring your John Deere equipment starts reliably every time. Begin with the battery, clean the terminals and test its voltage monthly during the season. Replace the battery if it struggles to hold a charge or is over 3–5 years old.

Change engine oil and oil filters according to the manufacturer’s schedule to keep internal parts lubricated and reduce starting strain. Replace the fuel and air filters at least annually or more often in dusty or dirty environments. Dirty filters restrict engine performance and make starting more difficult.

Inspect spark plugs, ignition coils, and wiring each season. Replace worn plugs and repair any damaged wires. On diesel units, periodically bleed the fuel system and drain the water separator if equipped.

When storing equipment for the off-season, stabilize the fuel and run the engine for a few minutes to circulate treated fuel through the system. Disconnect or trickle-charge the battery and store the unit in a dry, sheltered space.

Seasonal attention and simple upkeep go a long way in preventing frustrating no-start situations.
