How do I replace my lawn tractor oil?

See the step-by-step instructions below on how you can replace your lawn tractor's oil.

Note: most lawn tractor engines take SAE 30 or 10W-30 Motor Oil, check your owner manual for specifications.

1. Locate the oil drain valve

  • Most John Deere and other lawn tractors have an oil drain valve or plug on the side or bottom of the engine. Refer to your owner's manual for exact location if needed.

2. Drain the old oil

  • Place a drain pan under the valve.
  • Open the drain valve or remove the plug and allow the oil to drain completely.
  • Let it sit for several minutes until the flow stops.

3. Replace the oil filter (Oil Filter Options)

  • Use an oil filter wrench to remove the old filter.
  • Apply a small amount of new oil to the gasket of the new filter.
  • Hand-tighten the new filter into place.

4. Close the drain and add new oil

  • Close the drain valve or reinsert the drain plug securely.
  • Use a funnel to pour in the new engine oil to the recommended capacity (usually 1.5–2 quarts).
  • Check the dipstick and top off if needed.

5. Run and recheck

  • Start the engine and let it run for 1–2 minutes.
  • Check for leaks around the filter and drain plug.
  • Turn off the engine and recheck the oil level. Add more if needed.

6. Dispose of used oil

  • Dispose of used oil at a designated collection center
