How to Change the String on an EGO Trimmer

A simple step-by-step guide to replacing trimmer line on most EGO string trimmers.

Changing the string on an EGO trimmer is straightforward once you know whether your model uses a standard spool or a PowerLoad head. Most models follow the same basic process: remove the battery, take out the old line, feed in new trimmer line, and rewind or load it back into the head.

Before You Start
Make sure the trimmer is turned off and the battery is removed before you work on the cutting head. EGO’s guidance also recommends clearing out any remaining line before installing new line.

You’ll usually need replacement trimmer line that matches your model’s recommended size. Some EGO trimmers use a pre-cut length of line, while PowerLoad models use a powered rewind feature instead of manual winding.

Standard Trimmer Heads
For a standard EGO trimmer head, the process is generally:

- Remove the battery.

- Remove any remaining line from the head.

- Cut or prepare the replacement line to the recommended length.

- Thread the line through the center hole or eyelets in the trimmer head.

- Pull both ends so they are even.

- Rewind the line onto the spool in the direction shown on the head or in the manual.

Some EGO models use a lower cover assembly that winds the line when rotated in the arrow direction. On those models, the line is fed through the eyelet and then wound onto the spool by turning the cover.

PowerLoad Trimmers
If your EGO trimmer has a PowerLoad button, the process is even easier. Remove any stuck line, insert the new line straight through the head, and make sure both ends are equal before loading. Then press the PowerLoad button to wind the line onto the spool automatically.

A few videos and product guides note that you may not need to match arrows on some PowerLoad heads, because the line feeds straight through and then loads with the powered rewind feature.

Troubleshooting
If the line will not feed correctly, check for leftover line stuck inside the head. On PowerLoad models, that can prevent the new line from threading and winding properly.

If the line is winding unevenly or feeding too short, remove it and reload it carefully, making sure both ends are even before you wind. If the trimmer still jams, the line may be installed in the wrong direction or the spool may need to be cleaned out first.

Helpful Tip
For the smoothest results, use the line size recommended for your exact EGO model. The wrong diameter can make feeding harder and can affect cutting performance. EGO’s replacement guidance emphasizes using the proper pre-cut length and winding direction for best results.

Need More Help
If you’re still having trouble with your EGO trimmer line, the head may need a closer inspection, especially if the line is jammed inside the spool or the feed mechanism is worn.
