How to Create Guidance Tracks From Field Boundaries Using Generation 4 Displays

Step-by-Step Guide to Boundary-Based AutoTrac Setup on John Deere Generation 4 Displays

John Deere’s Generation 4 displays offer a powerful new feature: you can now create guidance tracks directly from your field boundaries. This makes setting up AutoTrac for boundary passes and field edges quicker and easier—no manual line drawing required.

Follow these simple steps to create and use guidance tracks from your boundary:

Creating a Boundary Guidance Track

  • Start by selecting your field:
Make sure your display is showing the field you want to work in.

  • Set up your track:

    1. Tap “Set Track.”

    2. Choose “Create New Track.”

    3. Select “Boundary Track.”

  • Pick your field boundary:
The display will prompt you to select a field and boundary. It automatically displays your selected field boundary for confirmation.

  • Assign a clear track name:

    • The Generation 4 display will name tracks with default names like Track 1, Track 2, etc.

    • It’s best to rename these for clarity. For example, name the track “Boundary” so it’s easy to recognize later.

  • Save your new track:
Once you're satisfied with the boundary and track name, select “OK” and then “Save.”

Using the Boundary Guidance Track

  • On your display, you should see a purple boundary line and your new guidance line.

  • The track spacing defaults to match typical implement widths (e.g., a 30ft tool will place lines at the correct offset from the field edge).

  • To begin AutoTrac operation:

    • Turn AutoTrac “ON.”

    • Begin driving and engage AutoTrac to follow your new boundary track automatically.

Recording Additional Guidance Tracks (A-B Lines)

Sometimes, you’ll want additional A-B lines—such as along key field edges or passes.

  • Record a new A-B line while following the boundary track:

    1. Select “Record Fill.”

    2. Mark your “A” point, then your “B” point.

    3. When done, select “Done.”

    4. Rename the new track (e.g., “East End Rows”) for clarity in your track list.

  • Switch between tracks when working:

    • Use “Set Track” to review and select the guidance track you want (such as your boundary track or any recorded A-B lines).

    • Renaming tracks helps keep your list organized and makes switching easier.

Tips for Success

  • Always name your tracks with meaningful names so you can quickly identify them in the future.

  • Use the boundary-based guidance for headland passes or when working close to the field edge.

  • Take advantage of Generation 4 display automation; it sets line spacing based on your implement width and ensures accurate passes.

Example Scenario

Suppose you need to spray or apply fertilizer around your field's edge:

  • Create a “Boundary Track” as shown above.

  • Engage AutoTrac and let your tractor follow the exact boundary, keeping a safe and consistent distance for your sprayer or tool.
