How to Install Tire Chains on a Ventrac

Tire chains can give your Ventrac 45RC added traction when working in snow, ice, mud, or other challenging ground conditions. This guide follows the installation process shown in our video and is intended to help you install chains securely before getting back to work.

Important: This procedure is demonstrated on a Ventrac 45RC. Always confirm that your tire chains match your tire size and wheel configuration before installation. Ventrac lists the 20x10x8 tire chain, part number 53.0212, as compatible with the 45RCN.

Before You Begin

Park the machine on a level surface and make sure it cannot move while you work. Lower any attachment to the ground, shut off the machine, and keep the area clear of bystanders.

Lay each chain flat on the ground before installation. Make sure the cross chains are straight, the chain is not twisted, and the traction studs face outward toward the ground.

Install the Tire Chains
  1. Release air from the tire.
Letting air out of the tire provides extra room to fit the chain around the tire and wheel.
  2. Position the chain around the tire.
Bring the tire chain around the tire, keeping the cross chains centered across the tread. Check again that the traction studs face outward.
  3. Connect the chain.
Fasten the chain’s inside and outside connections. Pull the chain snugly around the tire while keeping it centered.
  4. Tension the chain.
Use the chain’s tensioning hardware to remove slack. The chain should fit tightly enough that it will not shift during operation, but it should not be forced so tight that it damages the chain or tire.
  5. Reinstall the wheel if removed.
If the wheel was removed to make installation easier, reinstall it securely before moving to the next tire.
  6. Inflate the tire.
Restore the tire to the manufacturer-recommended pressure after the chain is installed and secured.
  7. Repeat for remaining tires.
Follow the same process on the other tires, checking that each chain is positioned and tensioned consistently.
Final Safety Check

Before operating the 45RC, inspect each tire and chain:

  • Verify that every connection is secure.
  • Confirm the chains are centered on the tire tread.
  • Make sure there are no twists, loose ends, or damaged links.
  • Check for clearance between the chain, tire, wheel, and nearby machine components.
  • Drive the machine a short distance, stop, and recheck chain tension.

Tire chains improve available traction, but they do not change the machine’s operating limits. Use appropriate caution on slopes, icy surfaces, and uneven terrain.
