How to Make Boundaries with a John Deere Gator in Operations Center

Easily create accurate field boundaries for better planning, guidance, and repeatability

A John Deere Gator can be a practical way to drive field edges and create accurate boundaries, especially when larger equipment is too heavy or the ground is too wet. Once the boundary is recorded, it can be saved and transferred into John Deere Operations Center for future use and editing.

Why Use a Gator

A Gator is fast, nimble, and lighter than many other machines, which makes it useful for boundary work in sensitive conditions. It can be equipped with John Deere precision technology so you can capture field edges and send that data into Operations Center. Accurate boundaries help support planning for tools like AutoPath, Section Control, and future repeatability across seasons.

What You Need

Before you start, make sure you have the right equipment set up on your Gator. Common items include a full-size John Deere Gator, a StarFire GPS receiver, a GreenStar, Gen 4, or G5 display, and the proper display and receiver integration kit. A JDLink modem is optional, but it can help transfer data automatically into Operations Center.

Set Up the Gator

Start by mounting the receiver and display securely on the Gator and connecting them to power. Then go into the display’s equipment setup and enter the correct machine measurements so the boundary is recorded accurately. Common setup items include inline offset, GPS height, and lateral offset, plus any implement or connection offsets if you are mapping from a front-mounted point.

Record the Boundary

Select the correct client, farm, and field before beginning the boundary recording session. On the display, choose Boundaries, then start a Driven Boundary and drive the perimeter of the field. As you drive, keep the Gator aligned with the field edge and use the record and pause functions to handle corners, gaps, poles, washouts, or other obstacles.

Save and Transfer

After you finish driving the full perimeter, save the boundary on the display. You can then transfer it to John Deere Operations Center wirelessly through JDLink or by USB, depending on your setup. Once it is in Operations Center, you can review the boundary, confirm the acreage, and make edits if needed.

Use Boundary Generator

If you already have uploaded field activity data, Operations Center can also help create boundaries automatically using the Boundary Generator tool. The tool looks at available data and can create a boundary when no existing boundary is available, using current-year data first or the previous year if needed. After running the generator, you can view the boundary in the Operations Center map and make manual edits if the line needs adjustment.

Tips for Better Results

  • Drive carefully and stay on the actual field edge so the boundary is accurate.

  • Use pause when crossing irregular spots, then resume recording when you are back on the edge.

  • Check offsets and machine measurements before you begin, because those settings affect boundary accuracy.

  • Review the final boundary in Operations Center and clean up any rough edges or gaps if needed.

When to Use Koenig Support

If you need help setting up your Gator, mounting the display and receiver, or transferring boundaries into Operations Center, Koenig Equipment can help. Accurate setup on the front end makes the boundary data more useful later for planning and precision applications.
