How to Plant Point Rows Without Shifting Your Guidance Line

When planting field edges or point rows, it can be tempting to shift your guidance line to reach a small area. The problem is that you then have to remember the amount of shift and correct it later. That can create confusion and make it harder to return to your original planting path.

Instead of shifting your guidance line, use the track spacing setting to create guidance lines for individual rows.

The Challenge With Point Rows

Imagine you started planting on one side of the field and are now finishing on the opposite side. You may need to jump over to plant a small point row or field-edge section before returning to your original pass.

If you shift the guidance line to reach that area, you will need to track the shift and shift back afterward. This adds another adjustment to manage during planting.

Use Track Spacing Instead

For a corn planter using 30-inch row spacing, change the track spacing setting to create a guidance line for each individual corn row.

For example, if you need to move over two rows:

  1. Open the guidance track spacing settings.
  2. Select Rows as the spacing method.
  3. Enter the planter’s row spacing, such as 30 inches for corn.
  4. Start moving toward the point row or field-edge area.

With row-based spacing selected, the display can use the closest available guidance line based on your current position. This allows you to line up with the row you need without making a permanent shift to your original guidance line.

Return to Your Original Line

After planting the small area:

  1. Return to the track spacing settings.
  2. Change the spacing method back to the original planter-width setup.
  3. For a 16-row planter, return the setting to 16 rows.

Your original guidance line remains in place, so you can continue planting without trying to remember or undo a line shift.

Why This Helps

Using row-based track spacing can help you:

  • Plant point rows and irregular field edges more easily.
  • Keep your main guidance line unchanged.
  • Reduce the chance of forgetting an offset correction.
  • Maintain a simpler guidance setup while moving between field areas.

This tip works best when the row spacing entered in the display matches the planter configuration. Before starting, verify the active guidance settings and confirm the machine is aligned correctly before engaging AutoTrac.
