How to Set Up Variety Locator on a Gen 4 Display in Your S700 Combine

Step-by-Step Guide for Importing and Viewing Variety Locator Files

Setting up the Variety Locator in a combine equipped with a Generation 4 display helps you accurately track crop varieties in each field, making harvest and record-keeping easier. Follow the steps below to ensure your system is ready and functioning smoothly.

What is the Variety Locator?

The Variety Locator is a feature on John Deere Gen 4 displays that allows operators to map and identify different crop varieties as they harvest, providing better data and simplifying management decisions.

What You’ll Need

  • Your John Deere Operations Center account (optional, for wireless transfer)

  • USB stick with Variety Locator files (if transferring manually)

  • Gen 4 display installed in your S700 combine

Setting Up the Variety Locator

1. Load Variety Locator Files to the Display

You can import Variety Locator files from two places:

  • John Deere Operations Center (wireless transfer)

  • USB stick (manual transfer)

Using a USB Stick:

  • Insert your USB stick into the display.

  • Select Import Data.

  • Choose Import from USB Drive.

  • Pick the profile you’ll use to set up the display.

  • The display will search for setup files in that profile, including Variety Locator files.

  • If you see your Variety Locator file in the list, select Import.
Note: If files are already loaded, you may skip this step.

Using John Deere Operations Center:

  • Select Import receive files from My John Deere Operations Center and follow the on-screen prompts.

2. Configure the Display for Your Field

  • Tap the Setup button (bottom left corner).

  • Select the field you want to set up.

  • Choose the correct crop (e.g., corn or soybeans).

  • The display recognizes if the field has a Variety Locator file and auto-selects it in the variety box.

3. Preview and Manage Variety Locator Maps

  • View mapped field varieties by selecting the Variety Locator Map.

  • Check the display legend to see where different varieties are located in the field.

  • Enable notifications so the display will:

    • Play an audible tone

    • Show a visible notification/drop-down when you enter a new variety

4. Finalize Setup and Move Between Fields

  • After setup, select OK.

  • When switching fields, the Variety Locator will automatically pull up the relevant map as you select new fields or crops.

  • For different crops (e.g., switching from corn to soybeans), simply select the new crop and the display loads the correct Variety Locator map for that field.

Common Questions

  • Do I need to re-import files for every field?
No. Once loaded, the Variety Locator files remain available and are automatically applied when you select different fields or crops.

  • How do I know I’m harvesting a new variety?
The Gen 4 display can notify you with a tone or message when you enter a new variety in a field.

  • Can I use wireless transfer instead of USB?
Yes. Files can also be sent wirelessly from the John Deere Operations Center, making setup even easier.

  • Where can I get help?
Contact your nearest Koenig Equipment location and ask for an Optimization Specialist for personalized support.

Helpful Example

After importing files via USB and selecting your corn field, the Gen 4 display will automatically use your 2018 corn variety locator file. View the map to see variety zones, and enable notifications for real-time updates while harvesting.
