How to Use Meter Runoff on Your SeedStar 4HP Planter

Ensure Precise Planting with the Meter Runoff Tool

Prepare for a successful planting season by using the meter runoff tool on your John Deere SeedStar 4HP Planter. This tool makes it easy to set the correct vacuum levels for a variety of seed sizes and optimize planter performance.

What Is the Meter Runoff Tool?

The meter runoff tool is a built-in feature on your SeedStar 4HP Planter that lets you:

  • Simulate planting in a controlled environment before the season starts

  • Set and test vacuum levels for different seed sizes

  • Check meter performance to identify issues like skips or doubles

Why Should You Use Meter Runoff?

Using the meter runoff tool helps you:

  • Find the ideal vacuum setting for your seed type

  • Reduce the risk of skips and multiples during planting

  • Save time troubleshooting planter issues in the field

  • Finish emptying seed from meters quickly at the end of planting

Step-by-Step Guide: Running a Meter Runoff Test

  1. Access the Meter Runoff Tool

    • From your planter’s run page, select Tools.

    • Choose Planter Runoff Procedures.

  2. Choose Your Runoff Type

    • Options include: single meter runoff, meter runoff by row, or a whole planter runoff.

    • A whole planter runoff is especially helpful for emptying seeds from all meters.

  3. Set Up the Test

    • Select the row you wish to test (example: Row 7).

    • Enter your target population and test speed.

    • Choose the number of seeds to run through the test (determines test duration).

  4. Begin the Test

    • Make sure the vacuum is turned on.

    • Press Start to begin. The system will dispense seeds as specified.

  5. Review Results

    • Monitor the row performance for:

      • Average singulation

      • Multiples (double seeds)

      • Skips (missing seeds)

  6. Adjust Settings if Needed

    • Fine-tune vacuum level and double eliminator settings based on test data.

    • Repeat the test to confirm improvements.

  7. Test Completion

    • The test ends after dispensing the chosen number of seeds (e.g., 2,000 seeds) or by pressing Abort.

Tips for Success

  • Always test before heading to the field—this ensures settings are dialed in for your specific seed.

  • If you notice skips or doubles, adjust vacuum or eliminator settings and rerun the test.

  • Use the whole planter runoff to efficiently empty seed when changing varieties or at season end.
