My John Deere cranks but won’t fire - what could be wrong?

if your crank won't fire, it usually indicates a problem with fuel delivery, air intake, or spark generation that should be checked.

If your engine cranks but doesn't start, it’s receiving power, but one or more critical systems, fuel, air, or spark, is malfunctioning.

Start by confirming there's fuel reaching the combustion chamber. Listen for the fuel pump priming, and check fuel lines and the filter for blockages. On diesel models, make sure the injection pump is delivering fuel.

Then, check the air intake system. A severely clogged air filter can restrict airflow to the engine, throwing off the fuel-air mixture and preventing combustion. Replace dirty filters and inspect the intake hose for cracks or obstructions.

For spark-ignition engines, remove the spark plug and inspect for fouling, cracks, or excessive carbon buildup. Use a spark tester to verify that it's producing a strong spark. No spark could point to a failed ignition coil or defective safety switch interrupting the ignition circuit.

Finally, ensure the engine isn't flooded - especially on cold starts. Let the engine sit for a few minutes and try again with no throttle or choke engaged.
