Preparing Your John Deere 4HP Planter for Field Planting
Step-by-Step Guide to Field Readiness Using SeedStar 4HP
If you’re getting ready to plant using your John Deere 4HP Planter with SeedStar 4HP, follow these clear steps to ensure your equipment is fully prepped for a smooth start in the field. These instructions will help both new and experienced operators avoid common issues and maximize their planter’s performance.
Step 1: Lower the 3-Point Hitch
-
Make sure the 3-point hitch is lowered to your desired field position.
-
This sets the stage for correct planter depth and ensures all systems are in the right position to begin operation.
Step 2: Set Your Markers
-
Decide whether you need markers turned ON or OFF.
-
If using markers:
-
Go to the Frame Control on your display.
-
Choose from Auto, Left, or Right marker options.
-
Check the Run page to confirm your selection is active.
-
-
Markers help guide straight planting rows, so set them as needed for the field.
Step 3: Turn On Your PTO (Power Take-Off)
-
Engage the PTO to power the Electronic Power Generation (EPG) unit for the planter.
-
You’ll see the PTO status indicator on the tractor’s corner post.
Step 4: Engage the EPG (Electronic Power Generation)
-
Open the SeedStar (SeedStar 4HP) icon on your display.
-
Select the DPG/EPG ON option.
-
Close out to return to the main planter controls.
Step 5: Activate the Vacuum and Set SCV Controls
-
Turn on your vacuum to begin meter rotation, a key to vacuum automation.
-
Make sure the Selective Control Valve (SCV) used for vacuum is set to “Auto.”
-
Set the flow rate to 7 for proper operation.
-
These settings ensure seed meters operate at optimal pressure.
Step 6: Configure Vacuum Automation and Meter Fill
-
On the planter run page, select the Vacuum function.
-
Your vacuum status pie should appear at the top left.
-
Step one: Engage the SCV and detent for vacuum automation.
-
Wait for all four pieces of the status pie to light up.
-
-
Use the Meter Fill functionality:
-
You may need to press the “Meter Fill” button three or four times.
-
Repeat until the vacuum automation pie lights up green for fully engaged mode.
-
If using multiple vacuums, take advantage of the “Use Common Target” feature to sync vacuums and adjust one target for all.
-
Set your vacuum target (example: 14).
-
Watch for your vacuum actual reading to closely match your target value.
-
Step 7: Final Checks Before Planting
-
Return to the Run page to review your current vacuum level.
-
Ensure all indicated system values (including vacuum status) meet the recommended settings.
Once you have completed these steps, your John Deere 4HP Planter should be fully prepared and ready to begin planting in the field.
Tips & Troubleshooting
-
Repeat “Meter Fill” pressing as needed if vacuum does not fully engage.
-
Make sure all indicators (such as vacuum automation and PTO) are properly displayed in your tractor’s control console.
-
For multiple vacuum motors, rely on “Use Common Target” for efficient setup.
