Why does my John Deere just click when I try to start it?

If your John Deere Equipment is just clicking when trying to start, it’s often a weak battery, corroded terminals, or a faulty starter solenoid.

A single or repeated clicking sound typically points to a problem in the electrical starting circuit. Start by testing the battery under load,it might show 12 volts at rest but fail under cranking conditions. If the battery drops below 9.6 volts while cranking, it likely needs replacement.

Next, inspect the battery cables and terminals. Corrosion can cause high resistance, limiting current to the starter. Clean the terminals with a wire brush and apply dielectric grease for future protection.

Then, test the starter solenoid. If the solenoid clicks but doesn't engage the starter motor, it could be faulty or not receiving enough voltage due to a weak battery or bad ground. Confirm ground connections from the battery to the engine block are tight and free of rust or paint.

Lastly, check the ignition switch and safety interlock circuits. If any switch (seat, brake, PTO) is malfunctioning, the engine may not crank at all. Use a wiring diagram and multimeter to test for continuity.
