Why won’t my John Deere tractor or mower start?
Tractors and mowers often don't start due to battery issues, fuel problems, or ignition system failures.
When your John Deere equipment won’t start, begin with the basics. A weak or dead battery is the most common cause, especially if the machine has been sitting unused, such as over the winter months. Use a multimeter to verify battery voltage (should read at least 12.6 volts for a fully charged 12V battery). Corroded or loose terminals can also restrict current flow - clean them thoroughly and tighten connections before proceeding.
Next, check the fuel system. Old, contaminated, or stale fuel can clog filters and fuel lines. Replace the fuel if it's more than 30 days old (or 90 with stabilizer). Check the fuel filter for blockages and confirm that the fuel shutoff valve is open. On diesel models, air in the fuel lines can prevent starting, bleeding the system may be necessary.
Lastly, examine the ignition system. Inspect the spark plug for fouling or wear and verify the ignition switch and safety interlocks (seat, PTO, or brake switches) are functioning correctly. These common checks cover the majority of no-start issues.
If your issue continues to persist or you would like expert technicians to look at your equipment, you can schedule a service at your local Koenig Equipment.
