Where is the serial number on a John Deere riding mower?

On most John Deere riding lawn tractors, the identification tag (serial plate) is mounted on the frame near the rear of the machine, most often low on the frame close to the left rear wheel. On residential John Deere ZTrak™ zero-turn mowers, it is at the back of the machine on the frame around the engine. The same tag carries both your model number and your 17-character serial number. What does the ID tag look like?

The ID tag is a small metal or durable sticker plate mounted on the mower’s frame.

• The model number appears next to or under a “MODEL” label on the tag.

• The serial number is a 17‑character alphanumeric code located near the top or top‑right of the tag.

Where to find it on riding lawn tractors

1. Park the mower on level ground, set the parking brake and shut off the engine.

2. Look low on the frame close to the back left wheel. This is the most common location.

3. If it is not there, check under or just behind the operator seat and along the rear frame rails.

Where to find it on zero‑turn mowers

1. Park on level ground, set the brake and shut off the engine.

2. Stand behind the mower and look at the frame just above the engine, then immediately below and around the engine area.

3. Some models tuck the tag slightly under the rear frame cross‑member, so crouch down or use a flashlight to see it clearly.

Tips for reading and using your serial number

Grass buildup, dust or wear can make the tag hard to read. Wipe the plate gently with a cloth and take a photo with your phone so you have the numbers the next time you need them. Once you have the model and serial number, you can:
